Pediatrics Q&A

What can I expect during a well-child examination?

Dr. Trate offers annual well-child examinations to monitor the growth and development of your child from soon after birth through young adulthood.

During the well-child appointment, Dr. Trate reviews your child’s medical history, family history, and any concerns you have about your child’s health. She also performs a comprehensive physical examination, recording your child’s height, weight, and blood pressure and checking their heart, lungs, and muscle strength.

If there is a family history of chronic health conditions, like diabetes or cancer, Dr. Trate may also request additional tests or screenings to identify potential health issues as early as possible.

A well-child visit is also a good time to ensure your child is up-to-date on immunizations.

Why does my child need immunizations?

Immunizations protect your child from a variety of potentially dangerous and contagious diseases, including polio, chickenpox, and meningitis. By immunizing your child, you also help prevent the spread of these diseases within your community.

Dr. Trate follows the recommended schedule of immunizations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), administering doses of necessary immunizations based on the age and health needs of your child.

In the event your child can’t tolerate certain immunizations due to allergies or other reasons, Dr. Trate works closely with you to create an alternative immunization schedule or health care plan to prevent serious illness.

What should I do if my child is sick?

Dr. Trate and her staff make every effort to accommodate sick visits when your child needs medical help.

Sick visits are recommended for children who are experiencing a high fever, persistent vomiting or diarrhea, or infections. You may also want to schedule a consultation for conditions like:

  • Asthma
  • Injuries
  • Earaches
  • Skin rashes
  • Stomach pain

During a sick visit, Dr. Trate evaluates your child’s condition and symptoms. She may request additional testing, including in-office blood work or X-rays, to provide you with an accurate diagnosis as fast as possible.

Depending on your child’s specific needs, Dr. Trate can prescribe necessary medications and provide guidance to keep your child comfortable at home while they recover.

To monitor your child’s condition, Dr. Trate may schedule a follow-up visit. During this appointment, she evaluates the progress of your child’s recovery and assesses the need for further treatment.
