Office Gynecology Q&A

What routine screenings do women need?

To assess your reproductive health, Dr. Trate offers several routine examinations, including pelvic exams and Pap smears.

During a pelvic exam, Dr. Trate physically exams your vagina and internal structures to check for abnormalities. As part of this exam, she may also request a Pap smear, a noninvasive test during which Dr. Trate collects samples of the cells in your cervix to check for signs of cervical cancer.

Dr. Trate recommends routine Pap smears every three years, or more frequently depending on your health history. You may need to have annual Pap smears if you have previously had cancer or there’s a family history of the disease.

If you have existing conditions, such as endometriosis or cervical cancer, Dr. Trate can perform additional diagnostic testing. She offers convenient on-site colposcopies and biopsies of endometrial tissue.

Why do I need a colposcopy?

A colposcopy is an in-office procedure that uses an instrument called a colposcope to closely view your vagina, vulva, and cervix if your Pap smear results indicate you may have cancer or precancerous changes in the cervical tissue. This test can also be useful in diagnosing genital warts.

The procedure is safe and typically takes less than 30 minutes. If Dr. Trate sees any areas of concern during your colposcopy, she may take a biopsy, or a sample, of the affected tissue for further analysis.
